Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe A-Z Update #1
Not to be confused with the similarly titled four issue miniseries from 2007 which was an update to the “All-New” 12-issue A-Z series, this five issue miniseries is an update to the 14-issue hardcover A-Z series. This round is a complete bonus to OHOTMU fans who wanted new entries for lesser known characters that didn’t make it into the hardcover books. Manbot appears in a 1/2pg entry.
What’s notable about this appearance is that Manbot hadn’t had his own entry in an official handbook, despite being a full member of Alpha Flight. Other members of the same team from volume 2, such as Radius and Flex did have entries in previous handbooks, so this entry fills a gap that’s been open for a long time. He did get a 1/3rd pg entry in Marvel Encyclopedia Vol. 2: X-Men, but that book is of a different format than the official handbooks. For those of you who keep track of these sorts of things, his stats have changed dramatically since that entry: Intelligence (2) is now (1/4* *-data processing), Strength (6) is now (1), Speed (5) is now (2), Durability (5) is now (6) and Fighting Skills (2) is now (1). So, he got dumber, weaker, slower, a bit more durable but worse in the ring. Poor Bernie. The explanation given for the lower strength is “Lacking hands”, and the likely explanation for slower speed is they discounted his booster rockets as his standard method of locomotion.
Manbot also gets a brand new illustration from Gus Vazquez, making this the first new drawing of Manbot since Wolverine #142 (Sep 1999). New illustrations drawn just for the handbooks are quite rare, and usually only done when there is no suitable full-body image nor other canonical view of the character. This particular issue is full of new images, as most of the characters profiled are fairly obscure or have had very few appearances.
EDIT: Gus Vazquez has posted a B&W version of the Manbot image on his website. Edited 10/11/10 and thanks to maniac mike for the tip!
