Northstar Cameo in X-Men: Legacy #227

Oct 2009

Note: The X-Men: Legacy title is renamed from the X-Men series as of issue #208.

Though not enumerated as a chapter in Utopia, a crossover between the Dark Avengers and Uncanny X-Men set in the Dark Reign storyline, events in this issue take place sometime during the first chapter, Dark Avengers/X-Men: Utopia #1. The rioting in the streets of San Francisco over Proposition X, an initiative to force mutants to undergo mandatory sterilization, that started in that issue continues here. If you didn’t get enough rioting so far, this one’s a doozy. Northstar appears as a regular member of the X-Men, having joined up in Uncanny X-Men #508.

xmenleg227The entirety of Northstar’s appearance in this comic is a cameo in a single panel. He’s shown standing around at the X-Men headquarters in Marin County in street clothes. In the previous issue of this series, (#226), Ares battled Rogue, so, chronologically, this scene must have taken place after Ares had already made his “jump out of a plane, no-parachute” entrance where we see Northstar in costume.

Now here’s where super-speed comes in handy. The guy starts out in street clothes, scuffles about with some protestors, goes back to HQ, changes into his costume, watches Ares jump out of a plane with no parachute, then goes back to HQ, and changes back into his street clothes to stand around for this shot. Effortless for Northstar.

Note: Although Mister Jeffries was a member of the X-Men at the time, he does not make an appearance in this issue.

Note: X-Men: Legacy #226 is also associated with the Utopia storyline, but is not an Alpha Flight appearance.

This issue has a variant cover.

    “Effortless for Northstar.”

    Er…that was sarcasm, right?

Well, I was trying to place this issue chronologically and naturally when I saw him in his street clothes, I thought this little cameo took place just after the rioting started (and it was still daylight).  But then I remembered he was in his costume (later that night) when Ares made his no-parachute entrance… so it just amused me that he changed twice.  Then I was thinking that he could just zip around and change clothes like it’s nothing, so it really must be effortless.  Say Cyclops then orders him to action somewhere… he’ll just run back to his room, change clothes and zip! off he goes, in one second, maybe less.
