Necrosha

The Necrosha story arc was a 13-part crossover that ran from late 2009 into early 2010 and cut across X-Force, New Mutants and X-Men Legacy, including two one-shots. The word “Necrosha” is derived from a combination of necro, the Greek prefix meaning death, and Genosha, the former home to some sixteen million mutants.

The main plot of the arc is the Black Queen Selene’s attempt to attain godhood after obtaining the ability to resurrect dead mutants. One key character to be brought back was Cypher, thus reassembling the original New Mutants team. Alpha Flight did not fare well in this arc, as we lost Diamond Lil in a senseless and incomprehensible manner. It was especially difficult because she hadn’t been seen for many years, and was seemingly brought back only to be killed. Mister Jeffries also appeared in this arc as a regular member of the X-Men Science team. Combined, they appear in four of the fifteen books.

Main series (in reading order):

  • Necrosha: The Gathering – not an Alpha Flight appearance
  • X-Necrosha #1 – not an Alpha Flight appearance
  • New Mutants #6 – not an Alpha Flight appearance
  • X-Force #21 – not an Alpha Flight appearance
  • New Mutants #7 – not an Alpha Flight appearance
  • X-Force #22 – Jeffries appears in one panel monitoring the battle on Utopia; Diamond Lil is shown in one panel tending to Iceman
  • New Mutants #8 – not an Alpha Flight appearance
  • X-Men Legacy #231 – not an Alpha Flight appearance
  • X-Force #23 – Diamond Lil killed by Mortis as Jeffries watches
  • X-Men Legacy #232 – not an Alpha Flight appearance
  • X-Force #24 – a portion of the panel depicting Diamond Lil’s death is shown on the Intro page
  • X-Men Legacy #233 – not an Alpha Flight appearance
  • X-Force #25 – not an Alpha Flight appearance

Associated issues:

  • X-Force Annual #3 – not an Alpha Flight appearance
  • Dazzler #1 – a one-shot published much later, also part of the “Women of Marvel” event; Diamond Lil appears in one panel in flashback to the unfortunate events of X-Force #23

A little too common of a trend for this team, unfortunately. Right, Bendis?

Yeah, I looked back over the post for X-Force #22 that I wrote not long after it came out. I got so worked up and optimistic about seeing Diamond Lil again, didn’t I? It was an honest fan reaction, but all the same, I’d just as soon rather her supposed invulnerability had borne my optimism.
